Spritz...

About a year ago, I switched to Weleda's Sage Deodorant - I think it's awesome and recommend it to everyone. My favourite part about it is that it smells like Gin and Tonic - just at the beginning... you don't go around smelling boozy all day - but enough to make you smile if you once upon a time enjoyed the occasional, ahem, G&T. Since having kids, well, that's become a very rare indulgence but never mind.

What I don't like about the Weleda deodorant, and every other deodorant that you buy is that you end up with a container. Container after container after container. Now, that said, the container you get with Weleda is a very nice glass spray bottle, which I hoard because it is nice and too good to toss, and it finally dawned on me that I should make my own and reuse the container. I did a little online research and found a great DIY website (Canadian!)...

Her recipe gave me a retrospectively obvious clue... use gin. Literally, gin and tonic. Hah!

I filled my container with 2/3 gin and 1/3 distilled water. I used about 7 drops of an essential oil blend by Aura Cacia called Gray Matter Batter (to make me feel smart in the morning and I just love the smell of mint) and like 5 drops of tea tree oil because it's antibacterial.

I sprayed it on the insides of my forearms first to make sure it wasn't going to burn or anything, and it didn't, so now I'm using it and I will monitor it's performance over the next week or so. Bonus, I think I can and will use it as a yoga mat spray too! This makes me happy.

Now, I appreciate the less obvious waste of buying a giant gin bottle, 2 mini bottles of essential oils, and a giant plastic jug of distilled water just to replace one glass bottle of deodorant spray. BUT... I keep tea tree oil in the house anyway, I intend to carefully store and use the distilled water for other such purposes in the future, and the essential oil will last a long time and can be used for o so many different things. Plus I can fill ALL my spray bottles and others for the cost of just 3 more. PLUS I can have a G&T on a sunny evening on my deck. Cheers!
